Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best 2TB Ssds for PS5
Choosing the right SSD requires balancing speed, heat, and price. This guide outlines critical factors for expansion.
Speed Requirements
Sony recommends a minimum sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s for PS5 drives. Drives meeting 7,000MB/s offer faster load times. Prioritize speeds close to the console's internal storage to maintain seamless performance.
Thermal Management
High-performance NVMe drives generate significant heat. A heatsink is mandatory for PS5 expansion drives. Look for models with optimized heatsinks that fit the PS5 slot to prevent thermal throttling during gaming.
Compatibility Standards
Ensure the drive is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. Officially licensed drives simplify installation by eliminating firmware concerns. Non-licensed drives may work but risk system updates blocking access.
Endurance Rating
Endurance is measured in Total Bytes Written (TBW). Higher TBW values indicate longer drive life. Select drives with sufficient TBW for regular gaming and content usage to ensure longevity.
Installation Ease
Drives with pre-installed heatsinks or included tools save time. Consider whether the package provides all necessary screws and a screwdriver. Simplified installation reduces risks of physical damage to your console.
Brand Reputation
Established brands like Samsung and WD often provide better firmware support. Reliable brands update drivers and ensure compatibility with system updates. Consider warranty terms and after-sales support when purchasing.
Future Proofing
Opt for PCIe Gen4 drives to align with current console standards. As games grow larger, higher capacities and speeds become more vital. Investing in top-tier specs extends the value of your expansion drive.
How to Use and Care for Your 2TB Ssds for PS5
Before installing, power off your PS5 and unplug all cables. Remove the console cover carefully to access the M.2 slot. Locate the expansion slot and remove the existing cover to expose the mounting bracket and connector.
Insert the SSD into the slot at a slight angle. Press it down firmly and secure it with the screw provided. Replace the cover on the drive and ensure it fits flush before securing the console housing again.
After installation, power on the console and format the new drive via settings. Regularly check for firmware updates for your drive. Keep your console in a well-ventilated area to help maintain optimal thermal performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a heatsink mandatory for PS5 expansion drives?
Yes, Sony requires all expansion drives to have a heatsink. Without one, the drive may overheat and fail. Some models come with pre-installed heatsinks, while others include separate heatsink kits.
Can I use a standard PC SSD for PS5?
Not all PC SSDs are compatible. The drive must meet specific speed and size requirements. Officially licensed drives are guaranteed to work, but some compatible M.2 drives can also be used.
How many games fit on 2TB?
Storage capacity depends on game sizes. On average, 2TB can hold up to 50 modern AAA titles. Some lighter indie games or smaller titles may allow for more storage space overall.
Can I install the drive without professional help?
Most users can install the drive themselves with basic tools. The process involves removing the cover and securing the drive. Following the official guide ensures safe installation without damaging the console.
What happens if my drive overheats?
Overheating can cause the drive to throttle performance or disconnect. Using a proper heatsink and ensuring good airflow prevents this. Thermal management is critical for sustained gaming sessions.
Are there warranty benefits with expansion drives?
Many drives come with warranties ranging from three to five years. Check warranty terms regarding PS5 usage. Reputable brands often offer support channels if issues arise during the warranty period.
